Good Neighbors Cyclone Idai Response 01: Malawi and Mozambique

Good Neighbors International(GNI) is responding cyclone Idai emergency in Mozambique and Malawi, Southern Africa.

On 20th March, Good Neighbors launched the emergency response program for cyclone Idai and the initial assessment teams were dispatched to the affected area in each countries for initial needs assessment, emergency coordination discussion, and response planning.

Based on the initial assessments in both countries, shelter, households items and food are found the most urgent needs for disaster affected people.

Good Neighbors Malawi distributed household items such as mosquito nets, blankets, buckets and a seed of corn for 385 households in Chikwawa district Kalima camp and for 1,723 households in Chikuse camp at 4th April. And another response project in Nsanje district is currently planning in cooperation with DODMA, national disaster management agency.

Good Neighbors Mozambique have set 4 emergency shelters and provided with food, hygiene kits and mosquito nets for 650 households, and conducted sanitation and hygiene education in Dondo and Nhamatanda district at 5th April. And it seeks further response and reconstruction programs in the region on basis of need of the field.

GNI is international humanitarian and development organization. It has made great strides in its mission by providing people around the world with a better quality of life since its establishment in Korea, 1991. GNI was granted General Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC in 1996 and acknowledged its contribution and granted the “MDGs Award” in 2007.
