Turkish Red Crescent Teams on the ground in response to Cyclone Idai: Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe

In response to the devastating floods following tropical Cyclone Idai, the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) initiates three simultaneous emergency relief operations to support to Mozambique Red Cross, Malawi Red Cross and the Zimbabwe Red Cross national societies.

Cyclone Idai, which formed over the northern Mozambique channel, made landfall at the city of Beira in Mozambique caused more than 1 000 lost their lives and with 600 000 persons affected in the northern provinces of the country. At the same time in Malawi, 922 000 people have been affected, with 82 700 people displaced, 577 injuries and 56 deaths. The cyclone also stormed through Zimbabwe, causing 65 deaths and displacing 9 600 people.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that a total of 1.6 million people have been affected in the three countries.

As a response to the destructive disaster affected heavily the region; a team of 4 (four) Relief Delegate has reached Mozambique Maputo on 21th of March and prepared a 15 tons of relief items (various food and hygiene items) with the Mozambique Red Cross and shipped to Beira port which will arrive on 24th of March.

The team also has arrived in Beira on 24th of March (today) and will conduct a rapid need assessment work and immediately will start distribution of relief items in the most affected areas with Mozambique Red Cross and IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) teams in the field.

More over a team of 3 (three) Relief Delegate has reached Malawi Lilongwe on 22th of March and a team of 2 (two) Relief Delegate has reached Zimbabwe Harare on 23th of March and started to work with Malawi Red Cross and Zimbabwe Red Cross teams to conduct need assessment work and initial action plan in the field to reach the people in urgent need.

Turkish Red Crescent has also send 2 (two) Shelter Delegate and relief items with the cargo plane from Turkey carrying the Search and Rescue Teams of Turkish Government to Mozambique. The plane expected to arrive in Beira airport on 24th of March.

Also in HQ level TRC has launched a public appeal for Cyclone IDAI and welcomes donations for humanitarian aid to the disaster response activities as well as for longer-term recovery and resilience programs.

Turkish Red Crescent is willing to assist the host National Societies and the Movement partners involved in the response efforts to alleviate human suffering in spirit of mutual assistance and solidarity.
