INDONESIA
Flooding and landslides in Papua have displaced at least 10,000 people to 18 different sites with a death toll of at least 104. Over 160 people are thought to be injured. Meanwhile, flooding in central Java has triggered floods and landslides which have damaged at least 172 houses and caused an unknown number of casualties.
MALAWI
Since the beginning of March, Malawi has experienced heavy rainfall linked to Tropical Cyclone Idai, which has led to intense flooding in 14 districts across southern and central regions of the country. Approximately 922,000 people have been affected, with 57 fatalities and 577 injuries recorded. Up to 125,000 people may also be displaced, most of whom are being hosted in camps and makeshift sites in schools and churches. Response gaps include shelter, food, health, and WASH.
MOZAMBIQUE
Tropical Cyclone Idai hit the coastal city of Beira on the evening of 14 March. So far 202 people have been reported dead and more than 1,500 people injured, but the toll is increasing and could reach over 1,000. In the central provinces of Sofala, Niassa, Tete and Zambezia there are 600,000 people estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance. Homes, health and education facilities have been severely damaged or destroyed. Access is still severely hindered, many roads are flooded and impassable, isolating communities in and around Beira. Heavy rains forecast until 21 of March are increasing the risk of more flooding, particularly along the Buzi and Pungoe river basins, potentially affecting 350,000 people.
ZIMBABWE
Tropical cyclone Idai has caused widespread destruction and created urgent humanitarian needs. At least 102 people have been killed. Particular concerns have been raised over the damage the cyclone and flooding has done to crops. Zimbabwe’s food security situation deteriorated significantly from September 2018 onwards, with many provinces, including those worst affected by the flooding, already facing IPC phase 3 and above.
