The CIMIC (Civil-Military Coordination) project of rehabilitating the tuberculosis hospital in Zugdidi district was initiated in 2007, and was made possible with the financial support of the European Commission Delegation to Georgia. The project, which took more than one year to complete, was finalised on 13 February 2009. UNOMIG played an instrumental role in realizing this project - CIMIC personnel maintained intensive contacts with the hospital's management throughout, the Engineering Section and the Trust Fund Project Officer assessed the condition of the hospital, prepared the necessary project documents, and identified suitable contractors to undertake the rehabilitation and refurbishment works.

Although this project was both time-consuming and laborious, the results are undoubtedly worthwhile. The tuberculosis Hospital now has a newly refurbished ward with 20 beds, and a new autonomous power supply system, including a high voltage line, input transformer and electric generator. Hospital conditions have been improved not only for the 2,000 tuberculosis patients who require special medical care in the clinic, which covers the Zugdidi greater area, but also for the medical personnel working there.
