Iraq: Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 30 November 2018)
OVERVIEW
Natural disasters featured heavily in humanitarian response activities during November 2018. Torrential rainfall and flooding on 22-23 November affected an estimated 22,000 people in Ninewa and 10,000 people in Salah al-Din. Qayyarah Airstrip, Jeddah, Salamiyah, Hamam Al Alil and Nimrud IDP camps in Ninewa were signinificantly impacted, as was the town of Shirqat in Salah al-Din. Severe flooding in Mosul led to a state of emergency being declared by authorities, and concerns about the long-term viability of the Mosul Dam.
On 25 November, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck far western Iran, near the border with Iraq. This was the second earthquake in the same region in a four-month period, and the third within one year. Contingency planning and preparedness, including for natural disasters, is one of the Strategic Objectives for the 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan.
OVERVIEW OF FUNDING
In 2019, thousands of families in Iraq will be facing their fifth year as IDPs. Despite the hardships associated with this, a majority of those surveyed indicated their intention to remain in displacement, as Areas of Origin continued to lack security, services and social cohesion.
