Overview of Hazard Incidents in September, 2018

In the month of September six types of hazards had been occurred among which two were manmade (fire and boat capsize) and four were natural (lightning, flood, earthquake and riverbank erosion). These hazards, all together, took lives of 29 persons and injured about 59 people.

The most devastating hazard was riverbank erosion that occurred at two upazilas (Naria and Zajira) under Shariatpur district. It has been washed away an area of 1.5 square km along with several schools, hospitals, clinics, bazars, and houses.

Another devastating hazard was lightning that occurred in 15 districts (Magura, Gazipur, Sunamganj, Satkhira, Rangamati, Bagerhat Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Netrokona, Jashore, Rajbari, Tangail, Chandpur, Sherpur and Moulvibazar) and took lives of 21 persons.

Also, there were fire incidents that occurred 13 times in seven districts (Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Dhaka, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Tangail) and caused death of one person and injury of 15 persons along with huge damage of property and assets.

As well, boat capsizes in four districts (Pabna, Noakhali, Bhola, Narshingdi and Chattogram) killed six persons and 19 persons were missing.

Flood in Gaibandha was also remarkable in this month in which 200 families became homeless and 1,100 hectors of crop lands were inundated.

Furthermore, earthquake occurred in this month. 25 persons were injured while getting down from several factories at North EPZ area in Nilphamari. No other damages were reported because of earthquake.
