Overview

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake (aftershock) hit the Indonesian island of Lombok on August 9th 2018. This follows prior earthquakes of 7.0 M on August 5th 2018, and a 6.4 M quake on Sunday 29th July 2018.

As of the 9 th August there are 259 recorded fatalities, 1,033 injuries, 270,168 internally-displaced people (IDPs), 64,534 damaged houses, and 429 damaged public facilities (Source: BNPB). These figures are expected to rise over the coming days as search and rescue continues and access to remote areas opens up.
BMKG has recorded 392 aftershocks following the M 7.0 earthquake on 5 August 2018, of which 19 were significant due to moderate shaking (>M 4.5). These aftershocks may become an additional risk to already crippled buildings and infrastructures and for responders and affected population houses.

Assessment of Needs

Muslim Aid’s emergency team with its local partner YKMI is currently conducting assessments in affected areas of Lombok. Thus far, key needs include;

  • Clean water
  • Food items
  • Emergency WASH facilities (toilets and bathing facilities for women)
  • Shelter and Non-food items (NFIs);
  • Shelter kits (tarpaulins, mats, rope, blankets, plywood and etc.)
  • Hygiene kits (towels, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, sanitary pads and etc.)
  • Family kits (clothes and underwear)
  • Psychosocial support both for children and adults.
