  1. The government of the Republic of Korea will provide US$500,000 in humanitarian assistance to Indonesia, where a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks that hit the Indonesian island of Lombok on August 5 caused casualties and material damage, through the country’s Red Cross Society.

o The earthquake has left 259 people dead*, 1,033 injured, and about 270,000 displaced in Indonesia so far.

    * Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) announced the number on August 9.

The earthquake on August 5 followed a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the same area on July 29 (it left 17 people killed, 365 injured, about 14,000 houses damaged, and some 9,000 people displaced). There is a risk of further damage caused by aftershocks, including a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 9. They have affected the neighboring Bali and Gili islands as well.

  1. Indonesia is a key partner in the ROK’s New Southern Policy. Cooperation between the two countries has been increasing further, as demonstrated by the fact that their relations were elevated to a “special strategic partnership” during President Moon Jae-in’s state visit to Indonesia in November last year.

  2. The humanitarian assistance from the ROK government is expected to help residents in affected areas restore stability in their lives and repair the damage as early as possible. The ROK government will continue to offer humanitarian assistance to countries and their peoples affected by natural disasters.
