GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – FEMA has awarded more than $320 million in Public Assistance grants to Puerto Rico for Hurricane María-related costs on the island. This brings the total to more than $3 billion in Public Assistance funds that FEMA has obligated to the government of Puerto Rico and municipalities.

The following is a breakdown of the $320 million in recently obligated grants:

• $250 million to Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority
• More than $10.6 million to Bayamon
• Nearly $10.5 million to San Juan
• More than $9.8 million to Puerto Rico National Guard
• Nearly $8.8 million to Yabucoa
• More than $6 million to Jayuya
• Nearly $4.6 million to the Port Authority of Ponce
• More than $4.3 million to Manatí
• Nearly $4.3 million to Puerto Rico Department of Health
• More than $4.1 million to Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company
• $2.8 million to Utuado
• Nearly $2.2 million to Puerto Rico Marine Transport Authority
• Nearly $2 million to Local Redevelopment Authority for Roosevelt Roads

These grants are approved for debris removal, emergency protective measures and work on roads and bridges.

Emergency protective measures are actions taken to eliminate or lessen immediate threats either to lives, public health or safety, or significant additional damage to public or private property in a cost-effective manner.

FEMA’s Public Assistance program provides grants to eligible government and certain private nonprofit organizations. This assistance is granted for debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures and the repair, replacement or restoration of disaster-damaged facilities. The program also encourages protection of these damaged facilities from future events by providing assistance for hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process.

The Public Assistance program is funded by FEMA and administered by the Government of Puerto Rico. FEMA obligates funding for these projects directly to the Government of Puerto Rico.
