Situation Overview & Humanitarian Needs

• According to the latest National System for Nutrition Surveillance bulletin in May 2018, 59 out of the 462 health zones, monitored at least four out of five indicators that are over the threshold for nutrition alert indicators in 13 provinces. The 59 health zones can be grouped into two categories: a) 11 health zones which have never reported nutrition alert before i.e. the first and b) 47 health zones that have been on alert at least once in the previous bulletins. Most of the nutrition alerts came from the provinces of Kasai Central, Kwilu, Kwango, Kasai Oriental, and Sankuru.

• 16 provinces are currently affected by the cholera outbreak in the DRC, of which 90% of the cholera cases are reported in the provinces of Kasai Oriental, Kasai, Sankuru, South Kivu, Tanganyika, and Kwilu. Grand Kasai1 is the most affected region with 52.6% of the total cases.

• Ebola outbreak: as of 29 June 2018, the follow up of all the contacts for 21 days was completed, and no new contact is currently under surveillance. However, field level activities continue to consolidate on the gains from the response.

• An Emergency Food Security Assessment conducted by the food security cluster, World Food Programme and Food and Agriculture Organization indicates a deterioration in food insecurity in Djugu territory of Ituri province.

The proportion of households in severe food insecurity rose from 2% in 2015 to 28 percent in 2018. The situation is more worrying in the Drodro health area, where six out of every ten households face food insecurity. UNICEF and PRONANUT will conduct two SMART nutrition surveys in Djugu and Mahagi territories in July, to evaluate nutrition status of women and under five children.
