The Bulgarian government will provide financial aid to China and Burma/Myanmar to mitigate the damages from the natural disasters that hit the two countries. The aid for China is to the amount of 100,000 euro, and for Burma/Myanmar- 50,000 euro. The money intended for China will be in the Chinese authorities' disposition and the money for Burma/Myanmar will be sent through an appropriate multilateral mechanism within the framework of UN or the EU.

Bulgaria's joining the two humanitarian operations in the wake of the devastating earthquake in China on May 12 and the May 3 hurricane in Myanmar is part of this country's policy of involvement in the international cooperation for development, indispensable part of which is humanitarian aid. The EU decided to render urgent humanitarian aid to the population of the devastated areas despite its policy for freezing the contacts at high political level with the governing military junta, the imposing of restrictive measures in relation to the systematic violation of the human rights and the lack of progress of the political process of democratization of the country, immediately after the disaster.

The money will come from 2008 budget resources earmarked for official development aid.
