DRC: SUPPORTING GIRLS EDUCATION

Growing up without a parent, living in a single-headed household, displaced by war, physical disabilities and poverty are all factors preventing young girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo from receiving a good education. But through UMCOR's Girls' Scholarship Program, more than 2,000 girls have a chance for a brighter future.

UMCOR is providing tuition, school fees, uniforms, school supplies and materials to help them achieve the best education possible. A mentor will be assigned to the girls to ensure that they stay focused and engaged in school activities. One-on-one counseling will also help them deal with basic health and hygiene-related issues, including malaria and HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

You can support programs like these and help give young girls in DRC hope and a brighter future by giving to UMCOR Advance #198400, Democratic Republic of Congo Emergency.

US: MISSISSIPPI TORNADO RECOVERY

UMCOR is helping the Mississippi Annual Conference bring relief to several families affected by a tornado that tore through Caledonia, Miss. on Jan. 10.

UMCOR is helping approximately 30-40 families with their long-term recovery. The Mississippi Conference is in contact with local churches that are developing resources and working with the recovery committee to meet ongoing needs.

The tornado caused extensive damage throughout the community destroying close to 40 homes. Included in the damage were the local high school and the United Methodist Church and parsonage. Please help by giving to Domestic Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670.

MOZAMBIQUE: MALARIA-PREVENTING NETS

Edu, 24, lives with his aunt and uncle, five cousins and younger sister in the town of Chicuque in Mozambique. Getting his family to use treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria was difficult because of the extreme heat. Edu has not experienced malaria since receiving a net and today it has convinced his entire family to also sleep under a life-saving net.

Malaria kills nearly one in five children in Africa. You can help prevent malaria in Mozambique by supporting programs like these which help to create awareness about malaria and distributes treated nets for prevention. Please give generously to Community-Based Malaria Control, UMCOR Advance # 982009.
