TRIPOLI, 9 May 2018 - The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation pledged EUR 1.5 million for a program to be executed by UNICEF aimed at promoting a conducive social environment for a rights-based, fair, democratic and inclusive governance in Libya with a particular focus on the safety and well-being of the child.

The program intends to make an investment in the future of the country, namely by contributing to strengthening the social protection of children. This will be achieved through supporting the action of relevant GNA Ministries in developing child friendly policies and will contribute to the delivery of public services - healthcare and education - to Libyan children.

“We can build a better future for Libya starting from building a stronger youth and better protected children. We look forward to strengthening this partnership with UNICEF and with the Libyan Government” said Giuseppe Perrone, Italian Ambassador to Libya.

“The initiative is part of a broader strategy pursued by the Italian cooperation in Libya focusing on two main areas: emergency interventions / humanitarian aid and resilience, on the one hand, and stabilization and reconstruction, on the other. The most vulnerable groups among the Libyan population are a key target for Italian cooperation initiatives, including children, who are the first beneficiaries of this initiative” said Flavio Lovisolo, Director of Regional Office of Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Tunis.

“A key aim of UNICEF’s programmes in Libya is to ensure that girls and boys, especially the most vulnerable, are protected and are supported in reaching their full potential regardless of constrains and surrounding circumstances. To achieve this, it is essential to prioritize child rights and child friendly procedures and policies, at every level where children are in contact with the law,” said Abdel-Rahman Ghandour, UNICEF Special Representative for Libya.

UNICEF, with its partners and counterparts, will engage youth justice professionals and members of civil society with a diverse range of knowledge and perspectives across the country in order to ensure full implementation of the program.
