An earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province on 12 May 2008, with over 10 million people affected and massive casualties and economic loss caused. Over 10 years, upon completion of all emergency relief operations and reconstruction programmes, the HKRC continues to support community recovery and disaster preparedness programmes in the affected areas to enhance the local capacity on emergency response and preparedness.

Sichuan

Donation Allocation
The HKRC received around HK$1.3 billion in donations designated to support the emergency relief, reconstruction, recovery and disaster preparedness programmes in six provinces which were affected by the 5.12 Sichuan Earthquake, including Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Yunnan and Chongqing. As of December 2017, more than HK$1.14 billion, about 87% of the total donation, were spent. The administrative expenses attributed to less than 1.5% of the total donation income.
After the “5.12 Sichuan Earthquake”, the HKRC has reserved part of the residual donations for emergency response, recovery and reconstruction programmes in quake-affected provinces. Detailed reports can be found on:
