In an apparent response to a clash between the Ethiopian military and regional authorities of Oromia State in Ethiopia, the Ethiopian military opened fire on the civilian population leading to 13 deaths, 20 injuries and 16 reported missing.
The aftermath of this armed encounter has resulted in the displacement of approximately 8 200 people (over 95% are women and children) fleeing serious unrest in their areas of origin to neighbouring Kenya (Moyale county).
Their needs are significant, including medical treatment, food, water, sanitation facilities and shelter. The lack of water and the overall poor sanitation situation is a reason for great concern regarding a possible outbreak of cholera. Security concerns have also been expressed by the asylum seekers, of whom the majority are residing in four makeshift campsites situated quite close to the border.
Given the ongoing situation in their country of origin, it is expected that more asylum seekers may arrive. DG ECHO is already responding through its partners active in the region and ready to provide immediate humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable.
