NICOSIA, Oct 25, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Cyprus will allocate some 14.5 million euro (about 20 million U.S. dollars) for the reconstruction of a Greek village which was destroyed by the disastrous forest fires this summer, Interior Minister Christos Patsalides said on Thursday.

The government will assign the project through public bidding in the next two months. A five-member ministerial committee has been set up to supervise the reconstruction of Artemida, a village in Peloponnesus where some 30 houses and a local cultural center were reportedly destroyed by fires.

"Our goal is to move on with the work, which concerns the reconstruction of houses in the area, as soon as possible and with the view of a high-quality work," Patsalides told local media after a cabinet meeting.

He estimated the cost will reach 14.5 million euro.

Cypriot government has opened fund-raising accounts at the end of August and called on Cypriot people to make donation for the village reconstruction Cyprus has assumed.

Forest fires which broke out in Greece in August killed 64 people and leaving hundreds homeless. Cypriot firemen were sent to help stamp out the fires.
