The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) remains one of the challenging humanitarian and development issues in Afghanistan. Limited access to WASH means a significant burden of poor health, nutrition, education and protection for children and women. The revised Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP 2017) target envisaged a need for reaching 880,000 people with WASH services in 2017. The Cluster partners have successfully reached 974,705 people during the period of last year. Despite a much lower caseload of returnees and IDPs, there has been a good progress in reaching the overall HRP target as partners also responded a sizable caseload of underserved population during 2017 (94,043 people), especially in the provinces with high caseloads of prolonged IDPs and returnees. The integrated approach promoted by ICCT and adopted WASH Cluster, especially during and after 2nd CHF allocation has helped address unmet gaps in institutions (health, education and broader crossing points that were providing essential lifesaving services to emergency affected population.
