December updates

During the month of December, the humanitarian community estimated 271,173 IDPs movements across Syria, which represents around 36% decrease of the total number of IDP movements that was tracked in November (374,384 IDP movements). An estimated number of 77,410 is added to the total of 193,763 tracked IDPs to cater for displacement not reported in 7 governorates.

The large decrease is related to the non-availability of data from governorates covered by NPM and due to the decrease in hostilities in Deir Ez-zor Governorate. The conflict activity between the SDF and GoS forces on one hand and ISIL on the other declined.

More than 73% of the tracked IDP movements occurred within/to Idleb Governorate. During December 40,591 IDP movements from Hama to Idleb were tracked.

Furthermore, 66,605 internal IDP movements happened in Idleb. The large displacement within/to Idleb Governorate is related to the large increase in hostilities in southern rural Idleb and northern rural Hama, where GoS forces launched a large offensive against NSAGs. In Rural Damascus, 5,690 displacements were tracked, of which 5,520 are internal displacements. This is mostly related to the ongoing clashes around Harasta and Nashabiyeh towns in Eastern Ghouta, which reportedly caused internal displacement in the enclave. Furthermore, an evacuation agreement in the Bait Jan enclave in western Rural Damascus brought a number of NSAG fighters, their families and other non-affiliated civilians to Idleb and Aleppo Governorates.

Note:

Due to unavailability of NPM data for the month of Dec 2017, IDP data from the governorates of Ar-Raqqa, As Sweida, Damascus, Deir-ez-zor, Homs, Lattakia and Tartous is not available. Keeping in view the trends of movements from January to November 2017 reported in these governorates an additional estimate of 77,410 is being added to the total of 193,763 to cover data gap in these governorates. The final estimate comes to be around 271,173.
