SITUATION OVERVIEW

In December 2017, fighting between government and opposition forces was reported in Koch and Bieh (Unity), and in Raja (Western Bahr el Ghazal), displacing thousands of people. During armed clashes on the Raja-Wau road on 16 December, armed groups held six aid workers from one international and two national aid agencies and thousands of people were displaced from their homes to Wau town. About 3,160 people fled to Uganda between 1 and 31 December, following fighting in Yei and Kajo-keji counties. However, the number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda overall had dropped to 986,140 at the end of December, from 1.03 million the previous month.

Humanitarian partners in South Sudan have provided assistance and protection to over 5.4 million people. This includes about 5.1 million reached with food assistance and emergency livelihoods and more than 2.1 million provided with access to clean water. Over 1,952,500 people benefited from child protection, gender-based violence services and mine awareness education; nearly 896,500 were assisted with vital non-food items, including blankets and mosquito nets. Nearly 898,900 children and pregnant and lactating women were provided with emergency nutritional assistance and more than 390,100 children were supported with access to education in emergencies.
