In the Afghan province of Sar-i Pul recent clashes over territorial control between the Taliban and the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces have caused internal displacement. Over 7,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of December and are likely in need of protection, shelter, food, and health assistance. The newly displaced are in addition to an estimated 9,600 people displaced between January and November of this year.
Anticipated scope and scale
Recent fighting over territorial control in Sar-i Pul district is likely to continue to cause casualties and displacement.
Insecurity is likely to prevent IDPs and host communities from accessing service. The winter months and upcoming lean season are likely to worsen living conditions of the displaced. Humanitarian response is ongoing in the area, but growing needs are likely to further pressure the delivery of aid, already challenged by the security constraints.
Key priorities
+7,000 in need shelter / NFIs
+7,000 in need of protection
+7,000 food insecure Crisis [IPC Phase 3]
Humanitarian constraints
Ongoing hostilities are likely to severely limit access to the affected areas. Ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers remains a challenge.
