US$2.9 million grant from Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science helping UNICEF support education and skills training for vulnerable children and youth in Jordan

Amman, Jordan, 11 Dec 2017 — A contribution of US$2.9 million from Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) earlier this year in May 2017 is helping UNICEF in providing critical educational support to Syrian refugee children in Jordan.

The grant is particularly directed towards learning support opportunities for students enrolled in formal education. UNICEF is providing this learning support in refugee camps and host communities through Makani centers across Jordan. Tailored support is also being provided to students in preparation for the Tawjihi exam, as well as availing vocational training opportunities for secondary-level Syrian refugee youth. UNICEF will continue developing a vocational training curricula, that includes technical and soft skills training relevant to the needs of high growth sectors ensure increased youth employment opportunities.

Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science, is a non-profit organization funded by the private sector in the State of Kuwait. This contribution comes under the framework of the commitment of the State of Kuwait in the 2016 London Donors conference to provide support as part of the response plans to the Syrian refugee crisis.

“We are extremely grateful to the support of KFAS that will enable students to access comprehensive educational support and that will provide youth with skills needed for better future opportunities,” said the Representative of UNICEF in Jordan, Robert Jenkins.
