Djibouti is a country undergoing rapid change. The current upturn in economic and social development offers a window of opportunity to sustainably improve the lives of children and women in Djibouti.

In this context, UNICEF and the Government of Djibouti are embarking on a new programme of cooperation for 2018-2022, and are committed to supporting the Government of Djibouti and other partners in improving children and women’s lives.

The country programme is fully aligned with the country’s long-term development plan, Djibouti 2035 Vision, and the objectives of SCAPE (2015-2019). It is guided by the Sustainable Development Goals, with special attention to equity, gender and resilience. The country programme will contribute to the outcomes of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), 2018-2022.

The overall vision of the country programme is to ensure that children’s rights to survival, development and protection are realized through access to quality social services and the adoption of healthy and protective behaviours. The programme will focus on three key priorities: (a) reducing under-five and maternal mortality through an integrated approach focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, from conception to the child’s second birthday, combining health, HIV, nutrition and WASH interventions; (b) providing equitable access to quality education, particularly for deprived children; and (c) reducing children’s vulnerabilities by providing access to child and social protection services, including to victims of violence.

This programme aims to ensure that no child is left behind in Djibouti, and that the most vulnerable children are given the best opportunities for a healthy life, to fulfil their potential and to remain protected against harm and violence. We invite all partners and donors to join us in accelerating efforts towards “a world fit for children”.

It is only by working together, side by side, that we can and will realize a fair chance for every child.
