Foreign Minister Mikser: European Union focusing on strengthening democracy in Afghanistan

Foreign Minister Sven Mikser is participating in the Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan today.

Mikser, who as foreign minister of the holder of the Presidency of the Council of the EU is serving in the capacity of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, delivered an address in which he reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to ensuring stability in Afghanistan.

“We are focusing on a number of key areas in Afghanistan: promoting pieace, reginal security, strengthening democracy, championing women’s rights, economic development and migration issues,” Mikser said. The EU is the biggest donor of aid to Afghanistan pledging 5.6 billion euros up to 2020.

Mikser also met today with Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. Discussions covered EU-Azerbaijan relations. “Positive developments allow us to make progress toward deepening relations,” said Mikser.

President Aliyev thanked Estonia for the successful organization of the Eastern Partnership summit.

The annual ministerial level Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process meeting focuses on cooperation and peace in Afghanistan. The process has 14 member states and 17 supporter states and 12 local and international organizations also take part.
