Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's statement on the tenth anniversary of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan, observed on 21 June:

I offer warm congratulations to the Tajik people and Government on this tenth anniversary of the signing of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan.

The signing of the Peace Agreement was eloquent testimony to the wisdom and patriotism of the Tajik people and leadership. The 10 years that have passed since this auspicious event have reinforced the understanding that there is no viable alternative to the road of peace and national reconciliation.

More than a decade ago, the United Nations was with the people of Tajikistan in their time of need. The United Nations became instrumental in helping to restore peace and stability in the country. And today, Tajikistan stands as an excellent illustration of a United Nations success story, achieved jointly with the Tajik people and the guarantor countries.

Over these 10 years, the Tajik people have worked hard to rebuild their country and made strides in strengthening its economy and State institutions. The United Nations is proud to have participated in the peacebuilding process through its mission in Tajikistan. A decade on, our commitment to working closely with the Government of Tajikistan is as firm as ever.

On this joyous anniversary, I wish the Government and the people of Tajikistan every success on the road to economic and social development, national revival and prosperity.
