Members of Australia’s peak-body for aid and international development non-governmental organisations have called for “urgent humanitarian action” by the Australian Government to immediately cease the cruel, untenable situation which has seen refugees and asylum detained on Manus and Nauru for over four years.

The resolution – passed at the annual general meeting of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) – stated the refugees were the “legal and moral responsibility of the Australian Government” and called for the Government to provide safe, durable solutions for their resettlement.

“People who have endured endless suffering have nowhere safe to go, fearing they may be attacked,” said CEO of the Australian Council of International Development, Marc Purcell, following the closure of the Manus Detention Centre.

“In recent months, two people have taken their own lives. The human toll of the Government’s policy continues to worsen, yet it does nothing to bring an end to this shameful period in our history.

“We must offer them a future where they can live in safety and give them a chance of leading a normal life after their harrowing period of arbitrary incarceration.”

ACFID’s members noted Australia’s three-year term on the UN Human Rights Council and the advocacy required to be undertaken by the Government on human rights in other nations.

Marc Purcell continued:

“The Australian Government’s capacity to advocate for improvements in human rights in other nations as part of the Human Rights Council will be irrevocably weakened if we do not stop this cruel mistreatment.”
