67,000 Individuals provided with assistance in August

35,088 individuals* (5,848 households) were provided with potable water: 6,738individuals (1,123 households) in Togdheer region and 28,350 individuals (4,725 households) in Lower Jubaregion;
In Lower Juba, UNHCR completed the construction of seven water kiosks and one elevated water tank. With expanded water facilities, UNHCR is able to supply additional 2,400 individuals with potable water.

31,500 individuals benefited from core relief items (CRI)**. 1,500 CRI kits were distributed to 1,500 households (9,000 individuals) in Woqooyi Galbeed region,1,600 CRI conditional cash grants were distributed to 1600 households (8,400 individuals) in Bariand Sanaag regions, 1,250 plastic sheets were distributed to 1,250 households (7,500 individuals) in Lower Juba region and 1,100 emergency shelter kits were distributed to 1,100 households (6,600 individuals) in Nugaal region.

737 individuals were reached with Gender Based Violence (GBV) response: 728 individuals in Bay region through awareness raising, dignity kits provision, legal and medical support and 9 in Woqooyi Galbeed region through psychosocial support.

Situation overview

• From 1 to 31 August, the UNHCR-led Protection & Returns Monitoring Network (PRMN), recorded 34,000 individuals nationwide displaced by the drought, bringing the total of drought driven displaced since November 2016 to 893,000 (804,000 since year to date).

• Baido acontinues to be the most affected area with 19,000 new arrivals in August, compared to 2,000 new arrivals in Mogadishu for the same period.

• IDP returns continue to decrease with 1,000 returns being monitored primarily from IDPs itesin Baidoa to home locations with in Baidoaor Borama districts (Awdalregion).
