IOM Somalia DTM rolled-out its Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT) during the 5th round of data collection in May 2017. The ETT covered 1,548 IDP sites/IDP populated places in 26 districts of Somalia. The tool aims to increase understanding of displacement situations and produce a geo-referenced “Master-List” of IDP sites. Further, the dataset collected through this tool provides analyses on the number of displaced persons (individuals, households), available services and priority needs at the regional, district and site level. Data collection was conducted between 10th May and 3rd June 2017 through key informant interviews (KIIs).Approximately 1.5 million people were reported to be displaced, the majority of them being children (under 18 years) and women. Bay and Woqooyi Galbeed regions had the most recently created sites (less than 3 months), while Lower Juba, Mudug and Bari regions registered an increase in IDP sites in the last 6 months compared to the previous round. 35 per cent of the respondents across the 26 districts under this survey reported not to have received any humanitarian assistance.

Bari, Gedo, Lower Juba and Bay regions appear to have a higher concentration of humanitarian services as compared to Lower Shabelle and Hiraan regions where limited access was reported. While some indications show a lowered risk of famine, the April-June rainy season showed little to no rainfall across much of Somalia. According to the UN children’s Fund (UNICEF), 1.4 million children are projected to be in need of urgent treatment for acute malnutrition in 2017.

FEWS NET projects that 2.9 million people will remain in ‘crisis and emergency levels’ of acute food insecurity through June 2017.
