Background

During the week of September 5- September 9, category 5 Hurricane Irma caused destruction on multiple Caribbean islands. St. Martin/St. Maarten, Antigua and Barbuda, and Turks and Caicos experienced heavy wind and rain damage. After Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria moved through the Caribbean causing damage to islands such as Dominica and Puerto Rico. St. Martin/St. Maarten, and Antigua and Barbuda experienced less damage from Hurricane Maria due to the storm’s southward position.

HOW SAMARITAN’S PURSE IS RESPONDING:

To date, Samaritan’s Purse’s deployed five teams and delivered over 192 MT of emergency relief supplies to five different Caribbean islands. Currently, Samaritan’s Purse is maintaining 63 staff members on the ground.

St. Maarten: To date, Samaritan’s Purse has served over one third of St. Maarten’s population. Samaritan’s Purse completed the following on the island:

  • Distributed over 18,000 liters of clean water

  • Distributed over 10,000 tarps

  • Distributed over 4,300 hygiene kits

  • Distributed approximately 9 MT of high energy biscuits Antigua and Barbuda: An 11 member team landed in Antigua on 23 September to begin assisting Barbuda families in debris and house clean-up.
    Turks and Caicos: In coordination with the local Providenciales church, Samaritan’s Purse distributed emergency relief supplies, including tarp, hygiene kits, and generators, to approximately 1,000 households.

Dominica: In collaboration with the local government, 10 members began hygiene kit and tarp distributions on the southwest portion of the island near Roseau.

Puerto Rico: Samaritan’s Purse delivered approximately 27 MT of emergency relief supplies to San Juan.
