A new project for rain water harvesting has been initiated in the Jaffna Peninsula as a solution to the severe shortage of water.

Accordingly, it has been planned to save 20 percent of the rain water in an area of 78 square kilometers around the Vadamarachchi lagoon.

The project has got the approval of the Chief Minister of Northern province as well as the cabinet and is being headed by a retired Secretary of the Irrigation Ministry and a retired Director of the Irrigation Department Vidyajothi Eng. A.D. S. Gunawardena.

The project is being monitored by the Northern Province Development Committee and the Policy Development Office appointed by the Prime Minister.
