1. In response to the request made by the Government of Myanmar to the Government of Japan to reconstruct/repair 493 schools affected by Cyclone Komen in 2015, Japan provided 1.5 billion yen to the Myanmar's Ministry of Education to support a part of such efforts.

2. Today, the very first school reconstruction was completed in Yangon, and the handover ceremony took place in Htantabin Township.

3. H. E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, H. E. Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Minister of Education, JICA representatives and local residents attended the ceremony.

4. The flood occurred in July 2015 caused serious damages on the school buildings, which were in dangerous condition for the students to study. To address these challenges, the Japanese Government provided funding for the construction of one classroom building 30' x 120' with 6 classrooms, one KG building 60’ x 30’ with 3 classrooms, one school principal’s building, and one latrine with two booths.

5. The project will benefit approximately 280 students from KG to Grade 6, and promote disaster prevention in the area, based on the principles of “Build Back Better”, with better and stronger building standards and structures, so that the schools become better prepared for future floods and other natural disasters.
