People of the Virgin Islands, I know the past few days have been extremely stressful for all of us considering the extensive losses caused as a result of the passage of Hurricane Irma.

I want to continue to reassure you that the Premier and I are working together in collaboration with our local, Regional and international partners to bring relief to all of you. Visiting Virgin Gorda and Anagada yesterday showed me that despite the huge challenges, we are getting supplies through, we are providing extra security, and with your spirit and togetherness, communities are rebuilding.

I thank you for being so patient throughout this period, showing so much determination and resilience, and we can assure you that additional aid and supplies are coming into the Territory and being distributed to communities.

As you already know the Ports (Airport and Seaport) have been functioning and are allowing for the priority transportation of relief supplies, emergency supplies, military and technical experts.

Water has been distributed in Road Town yesterday, at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and the East End and Long Look areas received supplies. Relief supplies are being received across the island, from District 2 to Anagada. Distribution networks are being set up in the other districts and whilst there is much more work to be done, there is progress.

As we work to ensure relief, we are also taking steps to ensure Security. The British Military and security forces from the United Kingdom and the Region are on the ground and working with Royal Virgin Islands Police Force. They are here to protect you and more protection will follow.

I encourage each of you to continue to display positive community spirit—The spirit that I have seen in each person that I have met across the island, which has been so inspiring. Be your brother’s keeper, help your neighbour and help your community.

I would also like to remind you that a curfew remains in effect from 6p.m. to 9a.m. daily. We also ask that you remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary to help with relief efforts underway.

I assure you that we will get past this and we will overcome.

Stay strong, stay resilient and stay united.

May God bless and protect this Territory.

Thank you!
