Background

The Water Price Monitoring assessment aims to establish a data collection, monitoring and reporting system on water market prices in order to allow humanitarian and development actors to better analyse humanitarian needs in areas particularly affected by drought.

July data collection in Nugaal was conducted through a quantitative survey between 24 - 31 July, focusing only on those waterpoints in the region that are charging for water. The assessment has followed the official district boundaries of the region.

All prices are shown in US Cents for 90L of water. This is the daily amount used by a household of six members, consuming the minimum Sphere standard of 15L water per person per day. Price changes are subject to exchange rate.

Key Findings

• This first water price monitoring exercise in Nugaal region covered 28 waterpoints in Eyl district.

• Prices of water in Eyl increased by an average of +12% between June and July.

• The majority of the waterpoints (44%) showed a decrease in price, 39% had an increase in price and 17% showed no change from June to July.

• Price increase was due to water shortage (100%).

• Fluctuating exchange rates from Somali Shillings (SOS) to US dollars (USD) was the reason for the price decrease reported in this factsheet for 88% of the waterpoints. One waterpoint reported that households accessed other waterpoints as the reason for the decrease in price from June to July.
