Due to Ogni cyclone and deep depression continuous heavy rains have been lashing coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh over last few days. This has resulted in flooding in 6 districts of Andhra Pradesh. Many villages continue to be completely marooned while a large number of people have been evacuated from many other areas.

The incessant rains breached rivulets, tanks and irrigation ponds and caused widespread damage to houses and crops, threw normal life out of gear and disrupted electricity supply. Road and rail traffic to large parts of the region remained suspended.

As per IMD weather forecast, heavy rains will continue over coastal Tamil Nadu, south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, coastal & south interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep

DAMAGE DETAILS:

In the 6 affected districts 57 Mandals have been affected. 29 people have reportedly died during the last five days. Eight people died in Guntur, 12 in Prakasham 5 in Krishna 2each in East and West Godavari. Persons Evacuated : In all 1, 95,928 people have been evacuated so far. 14,256 people were evacuated from East Godavari and 2,296 from West Godavari. Krishna district one of the worst affected district had 1, 16,611people evacuated. Guntur has 24,800 people evacuated and Prakasham district 37,965people. House damage: In all 11,330 housed are damaged fully where as 28,242 have been damaged partially. In East Godavari partial house damage has been put at 2089 and 5093at fully damaged.. West Godavari has 601 houses fully damaged and 1551 in West Godavari. Krishna district has 1738 fully damaged houses and 6392 fully damaged houses. Guntur has 2559 fully damaged houses and 5849 partially damaged houses. Large areas in the port town of Machilipatnam, Vijayawada and Gudivada in Krishna district, Repalli and Narsapur in Guntur district, Ongole and Chirala in Prakasam district and Eluru in West Godavari district and some other towns were under water. The Machilipatnam town was cut off yesterday from the rest of the district. Train services between Machilipatnam and Gudivada town were suspended as the track got submerged

ADMINISTRATIVE MEASURES:

District administration has opened Relief camps in all the districts. In all so far 195,928 people have been evacuated in Andhra Pradesh as of now.45 camps have been opened in East Godavari and seven in West Godavari. In the worst affected Krishna district 300 camps have been opened. 97 camps are functioning in Guntur District accommodating 24,800people.In Prakakasham district 93 camps are operating. The Indian Red Cross Andhra Pradesh state branch has mobilized relief items to Baptla and Repalle sub branches of worst affected Guntur district. The items mobilized are Bleaching powder, Chlorine tablets, Dhoti, Sarees and towels. In addition, the local Red Cross volunteers are involved in evacuation, relief distribution and supporting relief camps run by the government in the affected areas UNICEF is closely monitoring and assessing the situation.
