Prices of essential commodities increased in Maungdaw (10 Jun 2017)

During the holy month of Ramadan, the prices of essential items including— rice, chickpea (Sona), beef, onion, sugar, edible oil and fish have been increasing in kitchen markets in Maungdaw Townships, Nir Ahmed from Maungdaw said.

Suddenly, the prices of essential commodities have been skyrocketing in Maungdaw at the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, Nir Ahmed added.

Mohin, a Rohingya activist paid a visit to the kitchen market on June 9, morning, he found – a bag of 50 kg of rice is being sold at Kyat 23,000 while it was sold Kyat 20,000 in last month, but a bag of normal rice is being sold at Kyat 19,000 to 21,000 per bag.

In the holy month of Ramadan, mostly people breaks fasting (Iftar) with chickpea and a bag of chickpea is being sold at Kyat 65,000 Kyat, but it was sold at Kyat 50,000 before. So, poor people are unable to buy it, Mohin further said.

According to villagers, the prices of different essential of goods such as— chickpea, sugar, onion, edible oil, beef, quality fish, normal fish and rice were increased in the month of Ramadan.

Kafayad, a daily worker said, “It is very difficult for my family to buy a kilo of fish in Ramadan as a kilo of normal fish is being sold 8,000 Kyat which was sold 4,000 to 5,000 Kyat before.

A local elder said that the essential goods are not available in the kitchen markets as the goods are not being brought to northern Arakan from Akyab (Sittwee), the capital of Arakan state.

However, the Burmese government has not taken any step to stop the skyrocketing prices of the essentials, said a trader from Maungdaw on condition of anonymity.
