Bulgaria: 1780 m of embankments built along the danube; 3160 m strengthened to prevent the floods of residential areas

3160 meters of existing embankments were strengthened and 1780 meters were built along the Danube River. This is intended to prevent the flooding of the residential areas according to a summarized report of the crisis management centre that coordinates the work of all ministries and agencies in handling the consequences from the disaster.
Despite the harsh situation, there are not any victims or injured people thanks to the joint efforts of rescue teams and the armed forces, regional divisions and NGOs. Teams from the Ministries of Disaster Management Policy, Defence, Interior and Regional Development, as well as the water supply and sewerage company, municipal units, etc work 24-hour shifts.
55 489 decares of agricultural land have been flooded so far by the Danube. The ground floors and cellars of 1049 houses and 40 public buildings were flooded.
The authorities are doing their possible to enable the prevention of the danger of the floods and serious consequences, supplying the population in the affected districts with water and products.
The Civil Protection Agency provided 130 000 sand sacks and Austria donated another 150 000 sacks. The US European Command gave 380 water proof overalls. The financial assistance of the USAID, CARE - Bulgaria and the Civil Protection Agency was funneled into over 120 tonnes of mineral water and food for the affected. The Greek Business Forum provided 70 000 croissants. The Bulgarian Red Cross distributed 1600 liters of insecticide.
The state of emergency declared on 12 April 2006 is still in force in all flood-hit municipalities in the river valley of the Danube.
