“Through the Italian Cooperation service, we have arranged to contribute 400,000 euros to UNICEF in response to the dramatic humanitarian emergency in Niger, to provide food assistance to children,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano.

“In Niger, the humanitarian emergency is made all the more complex by the overlapping of different large-scale crises: nutritional, food security and epidemic, which are further worsened by the flows of migrants and displaced people in transit, in addition to floods. Italy’s contribution falls within the scope of the UNICEF ‘Humanitarian Action for Children’ programme for Niger and is in line with the emergency plan launched by the Government of Niamey”, added Mr Alfano. The minister went on to underscore: “The intervention of our Cooperation service allocating 10 million euros for 2017 is part of Italy’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Lake Chad, and was pledged at the Donor Conference held in Oslo last 24 February.”
