Kinniya Institute of Industrial Technology(KIIT), probably the first major tsunami relief capacity building project in the country, was inaugurated in Kinniya on Sunday 12 March, 2006.

Mr Irfan Khurshid, executive Director of the funding organization, Helping Hand - USA, a sister organization of ICNA Relief USA, was the Chief Guest at the Ceremony.

The project was implemented by the Social Service Department of Sri Lanka Jama'ath e Islami.

'The Institute has already enrolled trainees to follow courses in Industrial Wiring, Welding, Plumbing, Motorcycle Repairing and Aluminium Fabrication. likewise courses in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration and Computer Studies will be started soon' said Mr. S.M.Hussain (M.Sc), the Director of the Institute.

Mr. Irfan Khurshid in his address at the Opening Ceremony stated that he hoped KIIT would develop into a University in the next ten years and promised the fullest cooperation of Helping Hand USA.

An eight member Board of Management headed by Engineer ACM Naeem (M.Eng) has been appointed by the implementing organization.

Mr. Irfan Khurshid also laid foundation stone for a medical Centre to be built by Helping Hand by the side of KIIT.

The Social Service Department of SLJI has thanked Hon. minister Najeeb A Majeed for helping to obtain land for these two projects.
