On 11 December 2016, for the first time in 2 years, MERCY Malaysia entered Gaza through the Rafah border crossing in Egypt to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gazan people. This mission marks the first humanitarian mission allowed to enter through the Rafah border since the border crossing was permanently closed in 2014.

The humanitarian mission into Gaza was led by the Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt and Palestine Datuk Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, as well as MERCY Malaysia Director of Programme Development and Operations, Norazam Ab Samah. Two other Malaysian embassy officers were also present throughout the mission in order to assess projects being carried out by Malaysia apart from providing humanitarian aid.

MERCY Malaysia launched the Al Amal Centre Building, both a psychosocial centre for psycho-social programmes to be conducted, as well as a school for less privileged children and children with disabilities. Also launched, a new laboratory for the Faculty of Medicine at Islamic University of Gaza, each worth US$ 200,000 (RM 884,000). Apart from the delivery of food and winter amenities to families for upcoming winter months, MERCY Malaysia also conducted a workshop on ‘Sustainable Hospital’ at the Islamic University of Gaza.

Since 2008, MERCY Malaysia has channelled US$18 million into Gaza, being the contributions of concerned Malaysians.
