Bamyan - Over 30 members of the Provincial Council, Provincial Government and Civil Society shared ideas and discussed how partnerships can lead to good governance at an event held by UNAMA in Bamyan.

The Deputy Governor of the Province, Asif Mubaligh, said cooperation and guidance from the provincial council and civil society was the key to promoting good governance – something which he says is working well.

“The progress we’ve made in the fight against corruption are shared achievements we can all be proud of,” he said.

The Deputy Governor said improved transparency in recruitment processes and development planning and implementation were significant recent achievements.

The Provincial Council members said they were committed to promoting good governance, and along with civil society, can complement the work of the Provincial Government.

Aqila Hussaini from the Council said that she would continue to work for better service delivery for the province, while the head of the UNAMA office in Bamyan, Aileen Villareal, encouraged all people to be actively engaged in developing policies and plans for the region.

“A stronger partnership means better service to the people of Bamyan,” she said.

UNAMA is mandated to support the Afghan Government and the people of Afghanistan as a political mission that provides 'good offices' among other key services. 'Good offices' are diplomatic steps that the UN takes publicly and in private, drawing on its independence, impartiality and integrity, to prevent national and international disputes from arising, escalating or spreading.

UNAMA also promotes coherent development support by the international community; assists the process of peace and reconciliation; monitors and promotes human rights and the protection of civilians in armed conflict; promotes good governance; and encourages regional cooperation.
