Delivery marks $6 billion in wholesale-value medicine donated globally by Georgia-based nonprofit

BRUNSWICK, Ga., Jan. 12, 2017—MAP International is responding to the Syrian refugee crisis by delivering urgently needed medicines and emergency supplies to people who have fled to neighboring Jordan for safety. The U.N. Refugee Agency estimates more than 4 million people have fled Syria, and are desperately in need of medical assistance and care after escaping their war-torn home country.

MAP International—along with more than 80 doctors, nurses and health representatives from its partner organization, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS)—delivered medical packs to refugees in Amman, Jordan, this week. The packs contain antibiotics, oral rehydration salts, pain relievers, cough and cold medicine, basic first-aid supplies, vitamins, personal hygiene supplies and surgical gloves.

“We are seeing firsthand the desperate needs facing these men, women and children who have fled for their lives,” said MAP International former board member Dale Hanson Bourke, who traveled with the group to Jordan. “This has already been called the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time, even while the war in Syria rages on. We are working as hard as we can to provide critical medicine and assistance to help these refugees, and we will continue to do so.”

MAP International has been responding to the Syrian refugee crisis since 2013, providing nearly $2 million in medicines to partner organizations working on the ground in the region. MAP International has also delivered medicine and personal hygiene kits to Iraqi Christian refugees who have fled Mosul. After this latest shipment to Amman, Jordan, MAP International has now delivered more than $6 billion in wholesale-value medicines and supplies since the organization’s inception in 1954. “Reaching this milestone through a delivery to Syrian refugees is enormously symbolic for us,” said Steve Stirling, president and CEO of MAP International.

“We know our work is not done yet as millions more are still in need of assistance. We will continue to provide urgently needed medicines and supplies to the people around the world who need them most.” Each year, MAP International provides more than $330 million in medicine and supplies to 10 million people in more than 100 countries. It responds to man-made and natural disasters, and assists people living with neglected diseases and in severe poverty. It was recently recognized as one of the “Top 10 Charities Changing the World in 2016” by CNBC.
