Canada PWS&D provides education and livelihood support for 0206 Tainan Earthquake Program

I. Program background

On 6 February 2016, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake (later known as the 0206 Tainan Earthquake) shook southern Taiwan at 3:57 AM, with an epicenter located 27.4 km northeast of the Pingtung Country Government building, at a depth of 16.7 km. Affected regions included Tainan City (Yongkang District, East District, Yujing District, Guiren District, Xinhua District, Guanmiao District, Shanhua District), Kaohsiung City, Pingtung City, Chiayi County, and Chiayi City. The heaviest hit area was in Yongkang District, where Weiguan Jinlong, a residential building, had collapsed, killing 117, followed by Guiren District. Official statistics state 551 people were injured in the disaster.

As the earthquake struck on the night before the Lunar New Year, commonly known as the Lunar New Year’s Eve, many people had returned back to their hometowns to celebrate. However, the earthquake struck and caused great grief and suffering during a normally joyous time of the year.

II. Financial support contributed by PWS&D

Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) contributed US$160,000.00 to Taiwan Red Cross (TRC) to support population impacted by the 0206 Tainan Earthquake. This contribution was allocated into two main categories: (1) Education (financial assistance for orphaned students to continue their education) and (2) livelihood support for the injured population.
