TRANG, 11 January 2017 (NNT) - Rescue units have started a rehabilitation process as floods have begun to subside in many provinces in the South of Thailand.

In Trang, essential items and hot food have been handed out to the residents of Na Ta Luang sub-district by the Third Naval Area Command and a group of well-intentioned people as their homes still remain heavily flooded.

In Song Khla, ill people in Krasae Sin district were taken to Krasae Sin Hospital for medical care as soon as flood waters started receding. Local public health officials have also been visiting homes to warn people about water-borne diseases.

A cooking station has been set up by a group of people from local businesses and government agencies to prepare and distribute meals to the flood victims.

Meanwhile, Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport will remain closed until this Friday as heavy rain made it difficult for electrical engineers to examine the electrical system of the runway, according to Director-General of the Department of Airports Darun Saengchai.

The Department of Airports is also planning to propose a plan to construct a flood-dyke around the airport to prevent future flooding. In the meantime, water pumps will be installed in an effort to relieve the inundation.

In Chumpon, authorities will continue to monitor the flood situation in the low-lying area of the municipality even though most places across the province have seen flood waters declining. The municipal area is at risk of flooding as heavy rain has risen the water levels in Khlong Tha Ta Pao over the past few days.

Chumpon Governor Narong Polla-iad provided food and drinking water to flood victims while also instructing emergency units to be on standby around the clock to respond to all emergencies. More than 48,000 people have so far been affected by the deluge in the province.

In Krabi, people living in the municipality and Khao Phanom district have returned and begun cleaning their homes after the floods subsided. However, they are encouraged to stay abreast of weather forecast so they can be prepared when the next flood arrives.
