Australia's thoughts are with the people of the Philippines as they respond to the devastating impact of Typhoon Nock-ten.

Typhoon Nock-ten made landfall in the northern Philippines on Christmas Day causing at least seven deaths, damaging 70,000 homes and affecting more than 950,000 people.

Today I announce the Australian Government will provide up to $900,000 in humanitarian assistance. Australia's assistance will support 35,000 people with emergency items such as sleeping mats, blankets, mosquito nets, tarpaulins and hygiene kits. Our assistance will be provided through the Philippines Red Cross which is working closely with the Philippines Government.

Australia and the Philippines have a long history of working together in disaster response and risk reduction. The Philippines Government's decision to begin evacuations before the typhoon made landfall was important in mitigating casualties.

The Australian Government stands ready to respond to any additional requests for assistance once the full impact of the typhoon becomes clear.
