Situation Overview

During 2016, the volume of Afghan refugees and undocumented migrants returning to Afghanistan steadily increased with an estimated 232,566 undocumented individuals having returned by November 2016. As per current estimates, approximately 0.7 million undocumented Afghans continue to reside in Pakistan. In coordination with IOM Afghanistan, IOM Pakistan is supporting information collection, dissemination and in-kind assistance to returnees.

196,727 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) have also returned to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in 2016 thus far and the 107,064 still displaced are set to return in the next year with facilitation from governmental and humanitarian stakeholders. IOM continues to provide critical and multi-sectoral life-saving information to IDP populations through a combination of formal and informal communication channels.

As the year draws to a close, IOM Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to support migrants, refugees, disaster-affected communities and displaced persons through various planning exercises including commitments in the 2017 Pakistan Strategic Response Plan (SRP), the Common Country Assessment, and through its contribution to SDG 10 in reducing inequalities between migrants and non-migrants by facilitating dignified, humane and orderly migration.
