Sudan: Medair staff safe despite riots following Garang's death
Following the tragic death of the First
Vice-President of Sudan, Dr John Garang, in a helicopter accident on 30th
July, Medair wants to offer its condolences to all the Sudanese people
upon the untimely death of Dr. Garang and expresses its hope that the peace
process to which he was committed will continue.
Medair, which has been providing humanitarian
assistance in Sudan for over a decade, has yesterday and today temporarily
closed its Primary Healthcare Centre in Omdurman El-Salaam camp due to
some disturbances in the area, thought to be linked to the death of Dr.
Garang.
While we will continue to monitor the security situation closely and have introduced some restrictions on travel for our staff, Medair's other projects in North and South Sudan continue as normal; while respecting the state of mourning for Sudan.
All Medair's national and international staff are currently understood to be safe and accounted for.
Medair is an international non-governmental organization (NGO), based in Switzerland and has worked in Sudan since 1995. In government-controlled areas of Sudan, Medair provides access to primary health-care, water and sanitation for up to 200,000 conflict-affected persons in West Darfur; works with war-displaced people in Khartoum; supports access to primary health-care in the Nuba Mountains; and provides trachoma-care in Upper Nile.
