This situation report is based on information received from the United Nations Resident Coordinator's office in New Delhi.

Situation

1. Flooding in India, due to heavy rains since 24 July has caused 930 deaths. The evacuated 100,000 people have returned to their homes but 10,000 are still staying in the relief camps. 60 relief camps are opened in rural districts and 50 camps are functioning in Mumbai suburban.

2. As the monsoon rains have moved west-northwestwards extending into Gujarat, heavy rainfall again occurred on 1 August in the coastal region of Goa, West Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra. The affected districts in Maharashtra are: Mumbai Metropolis, Thane, Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Pune. Also affected were North and South districts in Goa.

Maharashtra state

3. As of 1 August, 926 deaths and 55 injured were reported in the state of Maharashtra. Landslides were reported to have occurred near Sakinaka claiming 90 lives. 100-150 persons are reported to have been buried in Jui village, 200 persons are trapped in Raigad Kondivita. Six other landslides were reported in Ragnagiri district.

Preliminary reports estimate that more than 10,000 houses have collapsed, 225,000 ha of crop has been damaged, and around 15,000 cattle were lost. Civil infrastructures-road and railroad networks, public buildings (schools, primary health center etc.) and water supply and telecommunications systems were also damaged.

Goa state

4. Both South and North districts of Goa were affected with 4 loss of lives, 340,000 affected persons and 119 houses damaged.

National Response

5. The state has released INR 325 million (approximately USD 7.55 million) to be paid to 325,000 persons and has deployed 2,000 municipal employees to carry out debris clearance in Mumbai and suburban areas of Thane district.

6. Newspapers warned of the threat of waterborne diseases. The State is organizing a hygiene awareness campaign through mass media. Health centers and hospitals are preparing to distribute free medicines to check any outbreak.

Additional Assistance

7. United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), as requested by the Director of Health Services in the state, has mobilized 300,000 ORS (oral rehydration salts) packets and 1 million chlorine tablets.

8. The Indian Red Cross Society in Maharashtra state has sent medicine and food packets to the Ratnagiri branch. The Indian Red Cross Society headquarters in New Delhi is monitoring the situation.

9. The European Community Humanitarian aid Office(ECHO) has a mission delegation in Maharashtra state since 30 July to conduct a needs assessment.
