€50,000 for emergency humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti

The Slovenian Government responded to the appeal of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), contributing €50,000 for urgent humanitarian aid to people suffering from the hurricane that devastated Haiti.

On 4 October 2016, Hurricane Matthew that hit Haiti killed over 500 people and caused extensive damage to road infrastructure and buildings. This resulted in the state’s largest humanitarian emergency since the 2010 earthquake, which affected approximately 2.1 million people. The situation is especially dire for 900,000 children who are facing food and drinking water shortages and do not have accommodation, medical care or access to the education system. More than 1.4 million people need humanitarian help, with over 800,000 people being in urgent need of food.

By providing emergency humanitarian aid and contributing to the World Food Programme (WFP), Slovenia is one of the states that responded quickly. The donation made by the Republic of Slovenia will improve food safety in the most strongly affected areas. This way, Slovenia will further contribute to the activities carried out to provide urgent aid for reconstruction and rehabilitation after the catastrophic 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Humanitarian aid to Ukraine

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) called for additional humanitarian aid for Ukraine. The Government of the Republic of Slovenia therefore decided to contribute €40,000 for urgent assistance to people in Ukraine.

As a consequence of long-lasting conflicts in the Eastern Ukraine, more than 1.1 million people had to leave their homes, and the lack of essential goods made the situation untenable. Additional problems are caused by insufficient access to drinking water and the deteriorating hygiene conditions, which also contribute to the spread of infectious diseases. The situation is especially dire as the winter approaches. More than 3.1 million are in need of help.

In the past, Slovenia has already provided urgent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and support to rehabilitation projects, including urgent material aid provided to people during the winter in January 2015, and has cooperated with the ITF Enhancing Human Security fund to provide psychosocial rehabilitation to over 240 children who were victims of the conflict since 2014. Additional humanitarian aid contributed by Slovenia through the ICRC will be dedicated to addressing the most vital needs of the people in need of help.
