As winter looms in Iraq and temperatures begin to plummet, Muslim Aid has launched an emergency appeal to help thousands of Iraqis fleeing Mosul survive the freezing winter.

According to the UN, the Flash Appeal for Mosul is woefully underfunded with only 64 per cent of the funds it needs. Muslim Aid is providing lifesaving winter kits, including tents, blankets, and heaters, to help keep more than 60, 000 Iraqis warm through the winter but urgently needs more funds to meet the desperate humanitarian needs. ​ Muslim Aid’s Country Director, Khalid Al-Alusi, said;

“As an Iraqi, this is the worst humanitarian situation my country has witnessed in decades. We’ve met hundreds of women and children who have fled Mosul with only the clothes on their back, and who are now face increasing hardships as winter sets in and temperatures plummet. Muslim Aid is working around the clock to ensure families can survive the bitter winter. We urgently need more funds to tackle the growing crisis before the worst of the winter weather takes hold.”

Up to one million people are expected to flee Iraq’s second biggest city as fighting continues to rage in and around Mosul. Together with partners, Muslim Aid has established a fully functional camp with electricity in the Salah-Al-Din province, South of Mosul. Inside the camp, we are providing people with hot water, and access to hygiene and sanitation facilities. Additionally, we are providing food to more than 33, 000 people and have established communal kitchen facilities to ensure people can fulfill their basic needs.
