Hundreds of families have lost winter food reserves, livestock and homes in Kosovo and Albania after three days of heavy rain saw homes flooded.

In Kosovo, the municipalities of Gjakova, Rahovec, Vushtrri and Podujeva were among the worst hit. Emergency teams from the Red Cross of Kosova are on the ground providing food parcels and clothes.

Disaster management coordinator, Burim Seferi, said: “Many families are being evacuated to shelters in local schools. Power stations have been flooded and the water supply has been damaged which means people are even more vulnerable.”

Flooding also affected northern Albania where three people are reported to have died and at least 1,000 families have been affected. Rivers and streams have swelled, putting at risk hydroelectricity plants in Fierza, Koman, Vau i Dejes, Ulza and Shkopet.

Albanian Red Cross disaster response coordinator, Fatos Xhengo, said: “People in the worst hit areas of Fushe-Kruja, Lezha, Tirana, Shkodra, Shijak, Mat and Dibra have lost clothes, food supplies and furniture.

“We have distributed food, clothing and toiletries to 200 people evacuated to two schools and have provided emergency supplies to another 200 families.”

Rain is continuing to fall in Albania and flooding is expected to spread further south to Vlora and Fier as the Vjosa river’s levels rise.
