Worldwide, about 70 million girls aged between 15 and 19 have been victims of some form of physical violence and about 200 million girls have been victims of genital mutilation. Every year, around 15 million girls get married before turning 18 and about 16 million girls aged 15 -19 give birth to a child. Every year a million and a half girls are killed worldwide before being born, due to sex-selective abortions.

These are the disconcerting data included in the dossier released on 10 October 2016 at the Conference in Rome in order to launch the fifth edition of the “Indifesa” Campaign run by Terre des Hommes Italy and established in 2012 to celebrate the UN’s International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October.

The Campaign aims to draw the attention of institution and general public on the serious violations of the rights suffered by girl children and girls and on the importance to protect and support the new generations of women in order to create a fairer and more livable world for all.

For this purpose the dossier of the Indifesa Campaign provides a deep insight into the condition of the girl child worldwide: phenomenon such as infanticide, female genital mutilations, child marriages, early pregnancies, migration in Europe, trafficking, involvement in conflicts, HIV infections are depicted through data, stories and testimonies.

"This year’s Dossier Indifesa (Defenceless) highlights, among other things, how little girls have gradually become not only a wartime target, but a real battlefield in itself, which is represented by their own body”, stated Raffaele K. Salinari, President of Terre des Hommes Italy.

To that end, stand up for the rights of the girls and little girls and say stop to violence against them taking part in the #orange revolution.
